PROPOSED CITY CHARTER AMENDMENT
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016
EARLY VOTING: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29TH @ 7:00AM TO SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH @ 7:00PM
ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2016 AND DURING EARLY VOTING, WAUCHULA RESIDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO CONSIDER ONE (1) AMENDMENT TO THE CITY CHARTER.
HOW THESE PROPOSED AMENDMENTS CAME ABOUT:
The City Charter is the foundation of Wauchula’s government. By referendum in 2004, the City’s Charter was changed from a Mayor-Council form of government to a Commission-Manager form of government. It defines the roles and powers of the legislative (City Commission) and executive (City Manager) branches of the government. The Charter requires the Commission to be comprised of seven (7) electors.
In July 2016, the City Commission discussed reducing the number of Commissioners from seven (7) to five (5). The City Commission discussed the number of Commissioners other Cities with comparable population of Wauchula had and the average was five (5). The reduction of Commissioners from seven (7) to five (5) would save the City of Wauchula $7,200 a year. The City Commission meetings were publicly noticed and were open to the public. On August 8, 2016, the City Commission approved to have the Charter Amendment placed on the November 2016 ballot.
If the Amendment is approved by a majority of voters it will take effect Tuesday, November 22, 2016.
